Biography:

Dr. Charles Edward Bugg, Jr.

Dr. Charles Bugg graduated from the University of Alabama with a B.S. in Psychology and a Minor in Biology. He completed his internship and residency in surgery and urology at the University of Alabama at Birmingham in Birmingham, AL.

Dr. Bugg is the recipient of the Resident Achievement Award from the Society of Laparoendoscopic Surgeons Montague Boyd Essay Contest and the 2002 Pfizer Scholars in Urology Award.

He is a member of both the American Urological Association and The Society of Laparoendoscopic Surgeons. His clinical interests include minimally invasive surgery, complex renal stone disease, urinary incontinence, urologic oncology, infertility and impotence.

•Dr. Mark S. DeGuenther

Biography:

Dr. Mark S. DeGuenther

Dr. Mark DeGuenther, a native of Atlanta, GA, is a graduate of the Medical College of Georgia in Augusta. He completed both his internship and residency in surgery and urology at the University of Tennessee in Memphis.

Dr. DeGuenther is certified by the American Board of Urology and is a member of Alpha Omicron Alpha Scholastic Honor Society, the American Medical Association and the American Urological Society.

His clinical interests include urinary stone disease, incontinence, urologic cancers and no-scalpel vasectomy.

•Dr. Rodney L. Dennis

Biography:

Dr. Rodney L. Dennis

Dr. Rodney L. Dennis is a graduate of the University of Alabama School of Medicine in Birmingham, AL. He completed his internship and residency in surgery and urology at Vanderbilt University Hospital in Nashville, TN.

He is a member of Beta Beta Beta, an honorary biological society, and Alpha Epsilon Delta, an honorary pre-medical society. He was awarded the Joseph Goldberger Scholarship in Clinical Nutrition at the Mayo Clinic.

Dr. Dennis serves as a member of the United States Section of the Societe Internationale D’Urologie, the American Medical Association and the American Urological Association.

In addition to all aspects of urology, Dr. Dennis’ areas of special interest are male erectile dysfunction, BPH prostatic obstruction, kidney stone treatment and prevention, urinary incontinence and vaginal prolapse repair, vasectomy reversal (vasovasostomy) and prostate cancer. He also has a special interest in male incontinence and was one of the first urologists in the Birmingham area to perform the male sling for this problem.

•Dr. Nicole DeSouza Massie

Biography:

Dr. Nicole DeSouza Massie

Nicole DeSouza Massie, M.D. completed her medical training at the University of Virginia, followed by an internship and residency at the University of Alabama at Birmingham in surgery and urology. While there, she served as Chief Urology Resident during her final year of residency.

Dr. Massie is a member of the American Neurological Association and of the Southeastern section of the American Urological Association. She is also an active member of the Jefferson County Medical Society and the Medical Association of the State of Alabama.

She served on the interviewing committee while at the University of Virginia School of Medicine and on the residency committee while at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. Her clinical and practice interests include voiding dysfunction, female incontinence and pelvic prolapse.

•Dr. Douglas L. Modling, Jr.

Dr. Douglas L. Modling, Jr.

Dr. Douglas L. Modling, Jr., M.D. completed both his medical training and his internship in general surgery at the University of South Alabama in Mobile. He then completed his residency in urology at Louisiana State University in Shreveport, LA.

Dr. Modling is a member of the Endourological Society of the American Urological Association, Past President of the Birmingham Urological Club and Past Secretary of the Alabama Urological Society. He is an active member of the American Medical Association, American Urological Association, Medical Association of the State of Alabama and the Jefferson County Medical Society.

Board certified by the American Board of Urology and a Fellow in the American College of Surgeons, Dr. Modling focuses his practice on minimally invasive surgery, complex renal stone disease, urinary incontinence, urological oncology, infertility and impotence.

•Dr. Brian S. Christine

Biography:

Dr. Christine

Dr. Brian Christine graduated from the Emory University School of Medicine in Atlanta, GA and completed both his internship and residency in general surgery and urology at the University of Alabama at Birmingham.

He is an active member of the American Medical Association, the American Urological Association and the Medical Association of the State of Alabama. Furthermore, Dr. Christine is a member of the Knights of Columbus and the Medical Corps of the Georgia National Guard.

In addition to his urology training, Dr. Christine completed a one-year training in anesthesia including post-surgical pain management. His clinical interests include diseases of the prostate and microscopic surgery for male infertility, including vasectomy reversal, the treatment of kidney stones, erectile dysfunction and inflatable penile prosthesis.

Dr. Christine is board certified.

Dr. Christine recently traveled to Australia at the invitation of urologists from that country. In August 2009 he conducted surgeries as well as lectures to physicians, nurses and patients in Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide, Canberra (the nation's capital), and Port Macquarie. Dr. Christine demonstrated his techniques for the implantation of penile prostheses, male slings for the treatment of urinary incontinence, and the artificial urinary sphincter (a device used to treat the most severly incontinent men); a total of 21 cases in 7 hospitals were performed. In addition, he spoke to a prostate cancer support group on his final night in Sydney. "The amount of surgery and work I did was tremendous, but the payoff came in the form of new friendships with so many fine people and especially in the form of e-mails from patients that I operated on who have done beautifully and are well pleased." says Dr. Christine. Most of the surgeries were videotaped and will serve as teaching videos for practicing urologists as well as urologists in-training. Dr. Christine will keep up his schedule of lecturing and surgery when he travels to San Francisco in October 2009 to present a surgical video filmed at St Vincent's Hospital (Birmingham, AL) "I have been asked to demonstrate my surgery for placing a penile prosthesis and a male sling under the same anesthetic to surgeons attending a meeting of the International Continence Society; lecturing and showing this operation to such a collection of doctors is a great opportunity to advance patient care.
